       Gina Lollobrigida |Biography

Lollobrigida Gina (real first name Luigina) was born on the 4th of July 1927 in Subiaco (Abruzzo province, 80km to Rome) in a small house right behind a shop with colonial goods as a second of all four (Giuliana [girl on left], Gina, Maria, Fernanda [girl on right]) Giovanis and Giuseppinas daughters. Ginas father worked as a furniture manufacturer to support the family.[6] His factory was bombed and destroyed by war. [8]. At the very young age Gina started taking parts in beauty contests and at

the age of 3 madam was chosen the most beautiful kid in Italy. Lollo used to act in school shows, where met her first love - nine years old Ferrucio. As a young girl Gina had a passion for drawing. One of her drawings was printed in a magazine called "Mickey Mouse". At the age of thirteen started learning how to sing in "Santa-Cecila" - the Academy of Rome. On the first of September 1939 a very difficult times have begun. Gina doesn't have pleasant childhood memories. When the war came to Subiaco, Giovanis factory was bombed and the house was destroyed. The family moved to the mountains.
After the war.
The new point of view spoke to cinema spectators. Neorealizm [3]. After the war took all they had The Giovanis family moved to Rome, where whole familly lived in one small room. Since then talented Gina, started selling her own drawed pictures (Alied soldiers caricatures) and also (under the name Giana Loris (Gina changed her name because as she say it was a shame for her to pose for the photo stories)) worked as a model for the photo novels. "That were the hardest times in my life", but Lollo took this work because of the difficult familly financial situation.

During those weeks, Lollo posed in a cold atelier before "at the bottom of a heart" was finished. Gina was the main character of the story and the comiks was a succesfull publication. In 1946 Gina was recrutated to the Academy of Fine Arts in Roma. Soon her actor talent and beauty become valued by world of silver screen (debut in "Aquila nera" by Riccardo Freda, 1946 whrere Gina spent four days playing a small background role for which earned 1000 lire a day). In those days most of her earnings went to her singing teatcher. Gina says that she become actress accidentally, that a movie director Vittorio De Sica saw her walking by her school and convinced her to play in the movies. "I didn't like the film. I didn't know the cinematography and did not use to go to the cinema. Even when I was sixteen the only movies that parents let me see were those with Shirley Temple and simillar pictures "allowed for teenagers". Sometimes J revolved and went to see "movies for adults"". One of those trips was not sucesfull. Gina went to the cinema to see an "adult movie" with Leslie Howard, Joan Blondell and Humphrey Bogart. The problem occured when Ginas father found out about it. It was a bitter lesson. Gina protested, runawayed from home was walking for an hour in the rain before reentered home. Because of the rain Luigina had a flu. The other cause why Gina did not think about actress career was that once in Subiaco saw making the movie "Vivere" with Tito Schipa and Doris Duranti. It was in 1937 and Gina was teen years old. "All that noise, and disorder... - all that was very disapointing". On the last day of 1946 doctor (physician) from Karyntia Milko Scotic who was an immiggrant (came to Rome in 1942) met Gina during the Silvester party. Few days earlier Gina broke up with her boyfriend who was a "Lazio" football player. Also Milko broke up with his girlfriend few hours earlier and so the friendly souls met on the party. "With a shame I have to say that we drunk to much wine. In that state of mind and soul we engaged and got a blessing from everyone gathered on the party. On the next day Gina wrote in her dairy: "1 January 1947. New Year, new boyfriend. Yesterday I meet Milko. Handsome brunette, 26 years old and he is a doctor...I hope we will get maried soon...". During the next years Silvester party Gina and Milko engaged one more time. This time it was for real.
At the same time also Giuliana engaged with a doctor and that made her mother very happy (two doctors in a family). Ginas next movie was "Il segreto di Giovanni Episcopo" in where worked with Silvana Magnano. The earnings were still small (2000 lire).
Meanwhile in 1947 Luigina got the title of Vice Miss of Latium province (the capital of which is Rome) and took part in the Miss Italy contest.
During one evening, when Gina and Milko were going home, meet a jurnalist Giorgio Salvoni, who was waiting for them in front of the gate. Without a word he put the couple to the taxi and during the trip said, that the car is going to "Colle Oppio" where the most beautiful woman of Rome will be chosen. Things went fast. "I didn't know what's going on, but heard shouting and clapping people". Unfortunatelly Gina didn't win but applause for her took almost ten minutes. Second place gave an oportunity to start in the "Miss Italia" contest, where later in in Stassa over Maggiore Lake n
he number 14 was lucky for her, and Lollo won the title of second Vice Miss of Italy ("miss Italia III") . The story has begun for good.
But before it happened Gina and Milko became a family. The marriage took place in a small church in Terminillo on the 14th of February 1949 (or 4th of January). The young couple were wearing a sportswear and ski’d to the church. Possibly because of the cameras, Gina did not enjoy the ceremony. Milko - the youngest member of the household was born on the 28th of July 1957 (weight 6lbs). During this eight years Lollobrigida become worldwide famous actress.
"The opposite of a plastic erotism ... was Gina Lollobrigida - an simple girl without make up, full of natural, but intensive and impressionable beauty." [1, page 33].  But before the big success become real Gina played in nineteen other movies like operas, music films and comedy films. Gina got a small part in a movie and her decision about acting was not much approved by Milko. He was just not confinced about the way of Ginas choise. At the same time Mario Costa gave her a proposition of acting in “Follie per l'opera”. Gina played with passion- during one scene Lollo slapped Arnoldo Tieri a bit to hard what filled the director with an enthusiasm but made Arnoldo like Gina little less than before. “I think that he did not forgive me that…” Gina, 1957.After “Follie per l'opera” Lollo became a quite popular person in Italy and finally Mario Costa offered her one of the biggest parts in “I Pagliacci”. The movie was seen in the USA and actress was remembered. Signing a good contract ended her financial problems. The fact, that Lollo did not have to change her surname was another nice point of the contract. The next movie was “Passaporto per l'oriente”. Gina decided to stop painting and singing but with all of her hard work in cinematography, Lollo builded her popularity and made a good beginning for the triumph. Since then Gina is a symbol of beauty, sex, mother and a woman. The french movie "Fanfan la Tulipe" (1951) which Gina (as Adelina) took part in is considered as the best costume spectacle ever and is also known as a movie that gave stardom to Gina. Over 6 milions Poles  went to the cinema to see both Gina Lollobrigida and Gerard Philip. The film was so succesfull that helped to end the financial crisis of French cinematography. Popularity was not decreasing, so in 1967 cinemas of PL decided to perform the story once again. In 2003 a new edition ("Fanfan la Tulipe", dir.Gerard Krawczyk prod. Luc Besson s. Vincent Perez, Penelope Cruz) of the movie opened the Cannes Festival. The new version is nice too.

"For rising from a nightmare Europe Gina was a happiness of life, taste of adventure and a beauty of a womanhood" [8, page 77]. After going back to Italy now as a big star, Gina played a brave part in "Altri Tempi". The next important movie was also French, full of delicate erotism "Les Belles de nuit". Finally in 1953 the director Luigi Comencini founded a great part for the actress in a comedy called "Pane, amore e fantasia". Playing a simple girl named Frisky brought her a "Silver Ribbon". "Silver Ribbon" used to be the most important annual award for actress or actor. Next Ginas movies were olso very popular. "La Romana" (based on a novel written by Alberto Moravia), "Pane, amore e gelosia", and "La Donna piu bella del mondo" filled the cinemas and made Gina the first lady of the European screen. The press has many explanations of why Gina did not play in "Pane, amore, e...". The real reason is known only by Gina and the producer. Lollobrigida

was nominated twice to the “Golden Globe” award. First nominee was in 1968 in a category “Actress In A Leading Role – Musical Or Comedy” for acting in “Bouna Sera, Mrs. Campbell”. Second nominee that Gina got was in 1984 in a category “Actress In A Supporting Role – Series, Mini-Series Or Television Movie” for playing as Francesca in “Falcon Crest”. In 1960 Lollo got a Golden Globe Henrietta Award in a category “World Female Film Favorite”. Also her film "Come September" costarring with Rock Hudson won the Golden Globe for Bobby Darin as “Most Promising Male Newcomers”. Soon a second “Silver Ribbon” went in 1963 to Gina who was awarded for playing the Napoleon’s sister Paulina Borghese in “Venere Imperiale”. Now few words about the USA. The first adventure with a New World took part in 1947. Because of the difficulties that Italian cinematography in that time had, Milko convinced Gina and suggested to move to the USA, where a doctor of his profession could have a great views for a career. While the couple was trying to get the license, Gina got letters from “Columbia” and “Paramount”. The two companies asked her to send photographs and “Columbia” wanted to get also a plate with Ginas English voice. At that time Lollo had photographic sessions for “Vogue” and “Life” magazines and soon few offers from America have appeared. One of them came from Howard Hughes, and was just to good to refuse. Gina flown to the USA without husband. Milko had problems with getting a new visa. The plane landed in Los Angeles, where on the next day Hughes and Lollo finally have met. From the third day, because of a terrible flu, the actress had to stay in bed for two weeks. That occasion gave more time to Hughes and a conviction that the girl won’t do any appointments with competitive producers. But Lollo met with Charles Vidor in “Paramount” studio, where becouse of initializated negotiations with Howard Hughes, refused Cecil B. De Mille’s offer about playing in his new movie. The “Aviator” found out about the visit in “Paramount” and told Gina not to see with other producers no more, because his contract is being prepared and will be ready soon. The time was running fast and the contract still wasn’t ready. Hughes knew that Lollo is bored with waiting , so took her on his trip to Las Vegas, where both spent two long and exhausting nights in many places the city had to offer. But Gina ran out of patience and told Hughes that she will go back to the Italy immediately. Howard finally sent a contract and the actress could go back to Europe. The long term (7 years) contract was translated to Italian longuage and was not Good enough. Lollo would have to play in one Howard's movie and in two films made by other producers but would be obligated to plays parts of Hughes choice. Many Internet websites say:"Hughes signed her to seven-year contract but prevented her from filming in Hollywood for years", but Gina once wrote that there was no agreement between them two and the negotiations were not ended. Later Hughes was constantly calling Gina and asking her to work and even to marry him. To complete the Howard Hughes episode I should say that he invited many other actors and directors from Europe and for most of them the trip was just the waste of time. But Americans loved Gina and... The first American movie La Lollo took part in was filmed mostly in Italy “Beat the Devil”. To play in that movie Gina lerned English to dubb herselfe. Also earlier spent a lot of time learning clear Italian longuage. Breathtaking colourfull and panoramical “Trapeze” is remembered as the first of Ginas movies made on the other side of the Atlantic. Vivid, panoramical full of dangerous scenes... and She... and her costume that was and is inspiration for others (example - Kylie Minogue uses costume stylized on Lollos).  Gina made also American but filmed in Spain a colour “Solomon and Sheba”. “Never so Few” with Frank Sinatra was another American production. In 1956 "Notre Dame de Paris" went to  the cinemas,  Gina was the most popular actress in Poland and whole Europe. Two Lollos movies were placed in the best ten movies performed since 1951 to 1956. None other actor or actress was so often on the covers as Gina in 1957 did ("Film" magazine). There are few interesting stories about "Notre Dame de Paris". Anthony Quinns health (please see his biography for details) was in a bad condition during that days and the crew was ready to take shots for "Notre Dame...". Many doctors tried to fix the problem but Anthony was still not well. The time was going fast so producer wanted to sell Quasimodos part to other actor (probably to Marlon Brando). Gina defended Quinn and refused the proposition of playing with any actor exept Anthony. Finally "Notre Dame..." was finished in at last two longuage versions (French and English). There are many differences between them two. Although Gina bacame the greatest star, she remained a polite and kind person. In 1959 French reporters gave her symbolic "Orange" as an appreciation for beeing gently for jurnalists. In 1960 the Skofic familly moved to Canada. To many speculations about it to decide which reason is the right one. The 60s brought a new vogue. Also our actress has changed. Her comeliness become more soft and angelic. Playing in “Come September” and "Strange Bedfellows" was a good opportunity for Rock Hudson to play with Gina. “Come September” was the only one movie made in 60's performed in Polish cinemas. A new film “Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell” in which Neapolitan woman played by Gina... was also very popular. “King, Queen, Knave “ was considered as a beginning of a new Ginas career. But she had other plans. According to her past work Gina says: “I never wanted to become a mere instrument in the hands of the director and I always co-operated with scriptwriters and often in lighting scenes.” [Lollo, 9]. When asked on the 13th of July 2004 about differences between todays and the former cinema Gina replied: “The 50s and 60s gave us dreams…” In the 1972, after “Peccato mortale” Luigina finished acting and sacrificed more time to the photography. "Living in a world of images, it became inevitable that I fell in love with photography" [Lollo, 9]. The first camera Gina and Milko had was a gift from Carlo Ponti (by the way his wife - Sophia Loren). Skofic photographed this what the most beautifull he had. Mabe Gina photographed too. The one who introduced Gina to photography was another enthusiast Yul Bryner (second - after Tyrone Power died durong making the movie- Lollo's partner in "Solomon and Sheba"). Since than Lollobrigida appears on the pictures wih a camera in her hands. She poses but first of all takes pictures. In 1972 Gina finally published a book "Italia Mia" (picture Japan, 1974) which was a first collection of Lollobrigidas photographs. The set was very good and amazed all the Europe. Also her portraits of Paul Newman, Salvador Dali and Fidel Castro were valuable and supprised the world of photographers. In 1994 second book called “Wonder of Innocence” reached the bookstores. Finally Gina created five photographic books- "...that took me over 12 years of work in the dark room"

Ginas inspiration for the first sculpture was her seven month old son and so she created a bronze portrait of Milko in 1958. There are many reasons why Gina decided to sculpture. The most important was friendship with Giacomo Manzu for whose sculptures Gina used to pose. "This connection with the Master and his works filled me with enthusiasm, and it was then I decided to once more cultivate my old passion." [Lollo, 9]. The year 1992 was under the sign of the presentation her artwork “Living Together” at the Universal Exposition in Seville. Presenting this artwork opened a new chapter in Ginas live. Probably in 1992 Ginas grandson Dimitri was born.
